BMW drives the future of electric vehicle wireless charging with WiTricity technology

WiTricity, the industry pioneer in wireless power transfer over distance, is pleased to see BMW deploy a wireless charging system in the recently unveiled 530e iPerformance (watch video), the first-ever wireless charging-enabled hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This product launch comes as the German government has adopted an incentive and investment program to encourage a switch to electric vehicles (EVs) while approving a push for a Europe-wide ban on ICE cars by 2030. WiTricity’s patented technology enables drivers of EVs and HEVs to simply park over a charging pad on the ground and power up.

BMW is the world’s first car maker to bring wireless charging to the market, eliminating the hassles of plug-in charging for drivers and enabling a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. In their own words: “BMW wireless charging makes charging easier than refueling.” The BMW wireless charging system will deliver 3.6kW of power with high end-to-end efficiency. The wireless charging system is unaffected by rain, ice and snow, ensuring charging remains convenient no matter what the weather may be.

“BMW is demonstrating its commitment to expand EV adoption by creating a compelling user experience, and we’re proud to have worked with them on wireless charging,” said Alex Gruzen, CEO, WiTricity. “As the automotive ecosystem becomes increasingly electric, WiTricity aims to make the EV ownership experience convenient and appealing to a broad range of consumers, beyond today’s early adopters. Our magnetic resonance wireless charging technology provides a way to charge that is simple, intuitive, and in line with what drivers already do – pull into their driveways/garages and park for the night. We look forward to continuing to work with BMW on global standardization and wider deployment.”
