WiTricity, the industry pioneer in wireless power transfer over distance, is pleased to see BMW deploy a wireless charging system in the recently unveiled 530e iPerformance (watch video), the first-ever wireless charging-enabled hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This product launch comes as the German government has adopted an incentive and investment program to encourage a switch to electric vehicles (EVs) while approving a push for a Europe-wide ban on ICE cars by 2030. WiTricity’s patented technology enables drivers of EVs and HEVs to simply park over a charging pad on the ground and power up.
BMW is the world’s first car maker to bring wireless charging to the market, eliminating the hassles of plug-in charging for drivers and enabling a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. In their own words: “BMW wireless charging makes charging easier than refueling.” The BMW wireless charging system will deliver 3.6kW of power with high end-to-end efficiency. The wireless charging system is unaffected by rain, ice and snow, ensuring charging remains convenient no matter what the weather may be.
