Wireless charging technology emerges as disruptor

Watertown, Mass. – July 25, 2023 – A new research study conducted by TideWatch, an independent market research firm, identified wireless electric vehicle charging technology as a key disruptor in brand loyalty among luxury electric (EV) buyers. Among those loyal to their current brand, wireless charging technology is now such a significant deciding factor that the feature would cause nearly nine out of 10 people surveyed to consider another brand.

“These research findings underline that for today’s buyer ‘luxury’ is synonymous with ‘technology,’” said WiTricity CMO Amy Barzdukas. “Wireless EV charging technology is at the epicenter of both the most advanced and most convenient technologies that will sway luxury buyers from their current loyalties.”

The study, commissioned by WiTricity, sought insight into the factors influencing luxury EV buyers’ decision-making process and their willingness to switch brands based on those factors. Among the 603 luxury vehicle owners that were studied, 83% expect to purchase an EV in the next 18 months and 95% plan to consider their current luxury brand first.

Luxury buyers demand high performance

Approximately eight in 10 luxury EV buyers expect that their brand will “ensure its EV has the best and latest technology” and that it will meet or exceed the life of their gasoline or diesel vehicles. However, more than 75% surveyed said wireless charging would make luxury owners prefer an EV over one that did not have wireless charging, and is a feature that luxury owners would pay more for. Wireless charging represents an opportunity for luxury brands to differentiate their EVs and conquest buyers from their competitors.

Price point is not a determining factor in interest for wireless charging

For luxury EV buyers, a price premium for wireless charging did not diminish their interest, with most indicating wireless charging would elevate their experience. It represents an opportunity for dealerships, too, as nearly everyone is at least somewhat likely to purchase the full wireless system from the dealer – and with 75% being very and extremely likely to do so.

Wireless Charging is Proof of Brand Promise

For the majority of luxury EV buyers, wireless EV charging technology represents the fulfillment of their brand’s promise. More than eight out of 10 respondents said that the availability of wireless charging makes it more likely they’ll purchase from their vehicle brand and that it is something their brand should offer – whether they choose the option or not. Those same luxury EV buyers indicated wireless EV charging as an option is something they expect from their brand, and that it demonstrates the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation.

The future of car brands and their customer loyalty lies within innovation, adoption of new technologies and communication with consumers. Learn more about what luxury car owners want in an electric vehicle. For more information on WiTricity’s automotive solutions, visit WiTricity’s website.

  • ABT e-Line plans for commercial introduction of wireless charging, starting with the Volkswagen ID.4 in 2024
  • The companies will work together to accelerate the adoption of wireless charging for EVs by deploying the first aftermarket solutions in Europe
  • (Kempten, Germany and Watertown, Mass., March 23, 2023) ABT e-Line, a technology driver and one of the leading companies in aftermarket automotive solutions, and WiTricity, the leader in wireless electric vehicle charging, announced plans to deliver aftermarket wireless EV charging in Europe. With extensive experience working with the Volkswagen Group (VW), ABT e-Line will initially upgrade the VW ID.4 to support wireless charging from WiTricity, with availability targeted for early 2024. The company plans to expand to additional EV models thereafter.

“ABT e-Line’s strong track record in customizing vehicles to meet the stringent demands of discerning customers fits perfectly with the leading wireless charging technology from WiTricity”, says Eric Plekkepoel, CEO of ABT e-Line.

ABT e-Line plans to extend wireless charging capability to additional vehicles, including the Audi e-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan as well as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz – an iconic lifestyle vehicle that fits perfectly to the ABT brand. The added feature of wireless charging will not only appeal to their tech-savvy customer bases but also provide further differentiation in their respective classes.

“We’re thrilled to see the simplicity and convenience of wireless charging expand to vehicles in Europe through this partnership with one of the leading companies in automotive upgrade and aftermarket solutions,” said Alex Gruzen, CEO, WiTricity. “Our proven, automotive-grade charging solutions will help address many of the electrification challenges by making charging as easy as parking.”

WiTricity’s magnetic resonance technology allows drivers to charge their EV simply by parking over a charging pad – all with the same speed and efficiency as plugging into Level 2 equipment. The global automotive standard for wireless charging for EVs was ratified by the Society of Automotive Engineers in 2020, based in large part on WiTricity’s designs, and ensures that both the ABT e-Line vehicles and WiTricity’s chargers will interoperate with other manufacturers.

Meeting consumer demand with a simplified charging experience

Consumers have indicated a strong desire for wireless EV charging. In several studies, 96 percent of EV consumers have expressed an interest in wireless charging[1], ranking it significantly higher in desirability than such other options as assisted parking or autonomous driving features[2]. ABT e-Line plans to meet this demand with new EVs that are equally desirable to promote the convenience, safety and accessibility of wireless charging across Europe.

“EV owners tend to count charging as the key drawback to ownership, and potential owners may see it as a reason to delay purchase. Charging with a cord or cable is inconvenient, as they can be heavy, bulky or trip hazards,” explained Gruzen. “And that’s before you add arms full of kids or backpacks, rainy weather or snowbanks. Wireless charging removes those inconveniences, so owners can simply park and charge.”

    About ABT e-Line

As a traditionally innovative company, ABT Sportsline has been conducting research in the field of e-mobility since 2009. In 2013, the first VW Caddy converted to electric drive by ABT appeared on the road. Since then, the electric vehicles have driven several million kilometers on delivery journeys. The experiences gathered during tough everyday use were a valuable contribution to the development of the next vehicle generation. The 2018 founded ABT e-Line GmbH, which is fully focused on e-mobility and alternative drive trains, is responsible for this field of work.

The spectrum of tasks ranges from the development and programming of control units, lithium batteries and complete drive trains to the construction of ready-to-run prototypes and small series production. As a premium partner of VW Commercial Vehicles, the company converted the T6.1 and the Caddy into electric vehicles. Together with major automotive groups, leading global suppliers and research institutes, ABT e-Line also carries out important development work in the areas of hydrogen drives and batteries.

    About WiTricity

(Watertown, Mass., Feb. 7, 2023) – WiTricity, the leader in wireless EV charging, today announced a collaboration with YuTong Bus, the number one bus brand in China, to provide wireless charging for YuTong’s autonomous e-buses.

This marks the first-ever commercial application of wireless charging for an autonomous electric e-bus, with WiTricity providing a key feature in one of the most advanced public transportation systems in the world.

“We are so excited to see this first real demonstration with YuTong Bus of wireless charging powering autonomy at scale,” said Alex Gruzen, CEO of WiTricity. “As autonomy progresses, the logistics of charging and servicing will become even more critical. WiTricity wireless EV charging can enable the next generation of electrified transportation and logistics.”

The commercial deployment of wireless charging in YuTong’s e-buses will debut in Zhengzhou, China, on the Xiaoyu 2.0 autonomous minibus. The level 4 autonomous bus that seats 10 passengers has a range of 150 km.

WiTricity Halo® chargers simplify the charging experience by removing the need to plug in. This is particularly significant in transit applications, where the heavy and awkward cords and cables required could contribute to slips and falls, the leading cause of workers’ compensation claims for commercial drivers. As transit applications for autonomous shuttles and buses grow worldwide, wireless charging will play a key role in keeping those vehicles on the road.

WiTricity has seen the deployment of its wireless EV charging to date in passenger vehicles, including FAW’s HongQi and Genesis’s GV60. Taxi trials are also underway, showing off the use of wireless charging in queues to give the taxis “power snacks™” as they wait for their next fare. The Yutong buses are the first demonstration of wireless charging with autonomous commercial vehicles.

EU-funded REFLECTIVE project incorporates WiTricity wireless charging system to enable reconfigurable autonomous vehicles

(Espoo and Tampere, Finland and Watertown, Mass., January 17, 2023) – Today, WiTricity, the global leader in wireless charging for electric vehicles, and VTT, one of Europe’s leading research institutions, announced a collaboration to install WiTricity’s wireless charging technology to support the EU-funded REFLECTIVE project. The project will evaluate wireless charging as part of REFLECTIVE’s work on developing and testing an innovative, light electric vehicle for urban environments.

“We are proud to coordinate this project with wireless charging and autonomous driving capabilities,” said Senior Scientist, Principal Investigator Jenni Pippuri-Mäkeläinen at VTT. “Transportation represents almost a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, and the work we are doing to streamline and simplify electrification will help us address this climate crisis. Wireless charging is important to accelerate the adoption of EVs and help us make a cleaner, greener world.”

WiTricity’s wireless charging system has been successfully installed and tested at VTT’s laboratory facility in Tampere, Finland. WiTricity Halo™ chargers simplify the charging experience by removing the need to plug in—just park and charge. The system delivers 11 kW wireless, enabling a charge rate that provides up to 40-56 km (25-35 miles) of driving range per hour of charging time for a normal passenger vehicle (or 80 km/50 miles of driving range per hour for light vehicles such as the REFLECTIVE vehicle), a speed and efficiency on par with today’s Level 2 AC plug-in chargers.

The project’s next step will be the integration of the wireless charger into the REFLECTIVE vehicle. With the automated driving system developed by one of the REFLECTIVE partners, Finnish technology company Sensible 4, the REFLECTIVE vehicle can be autonomously repositioned and parked on top of the wireless charger.

“Autonomous vehicles need to be able to charge without human interaction in order to truly reimagine transportation,” said Hubert Wolters, WiTricity Vice President of Business Development for Europe. “Our technology removes a barrier to EV adoption and will be especially important as electric vehicles become autonomous. WiTricity Halo’s high efficiency, flexible positioning, and all-weather capabilities will be key to the REFLECTIVE project’s goals.”

    The REFLECTIVE project

Transport represents almost a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions and is the main cause of air pollution in its cities. The REFLECTIVE project addresses the problem of emissions through the development and testing of an innovative, zero-emission, light electric vehicle concept with a right-sized powertrain that will be intrinsically modular and scalable from a heavy quadricycle to a small passenger car. The vehicle will be tailored to urban usage needs and will be equipped with reconfigurable interiors for multi-purpose uses, from passengers to goods transport. With optimized structural design and Sensible 4 autonomous driving capabilities, the vehicle targets improving the safety, usability, and quality of light vehicles and bridging the gap with actual M1-category vehicles.

    Wireless charging fuels autonomy

WiTricity’s wireless charging technology, which was honored with the Autonomous Vehicle Technology (AVT) ACES Award, is necessary to make the new reconfigurable vehicle truly autonomous. Combining the technology with the autonomous relocation functionality allows the vehicle to reach the charging station and charge automatically, without the need for human intervention to plug it in. WiTricity’s technology offers high efficiency, flexible positioning, and the ability to transfer power through surfaces like concrete, asphalt, water, or snow.
